Turning Point
This month In ELA Times, I’ll be sharing a story about the 2011 General Deer any weapon season. But first We’ll have to go over the rules for on and off the field. We’ll be according to the 2011 Utah Big Game guide book.
Hunter orange
Utah Code § 23-20-31
You must obey Utah’s hunter orange regulation if a centerfire rifle hunt is happening in the area where you’re archery hunting. If you’re hunting in an area where a centerfire rifle hunt is occurring, you must wear a minimum of 400 square inches of hunter orange material on your head, chest and back.
A camouflage pattern in hunter orange meets this requirement; however, the Division strongly encourages hunters to continue using solid hunter orange whenever possible.
There are some exceptions to the hunter orange rule. You’re not required to wear hunter orange if you’re participating in a bighorn sheep hunt, a bison hunt, a moose hunt or a mountain goat hunt—or a hunt that requires you to possess. Unless You are on private property.
This year we went to the north eastern region of Utah. We went to vernal, or LaPoint Utah.
It was 27 degrees every morning or lower, frost on the ground. The first three days were rough, We saw big bucks every day. The deer were so pressured from the previous week of hunters, by this time of the hunt the rest of hunters were back to work and have already got their deer. The deer you could tell have been pushed, which makes it A lot harder on us. The first day we saw probably 4 decent size bucks, they were either to far or in brush to the point that I could not shoot. We hunted from 6:00 in the morning till 3 in afternoon, and the deer only move from 6 till 9 o’clock. But we kept trying. The second day we saw the same deer same spot. Third day same thing. Now... its the fourth day, Last day of the general deer hunt. I had a dream the night before that today was the day. The place we were hunting was along a canal. Where we saw the deer every day was in my uncles friends field and gave us permission. We woke up at 530 in the morning got ready ate breakfast and hopped in the truck. Maybe 2 miles from my uncles house was our spot. Parked the truck walked up the road, still dark, Sat up against the fence and spotted four doe, just waited for 10 minutes, you don't want to spook off the doe because the bucks rely on the doe, they watch them feed and make sure its safe before they come out of the trees. so we held still waited and a little fork and horn walked across, about to shoot the small one and in the corner of my scope there was a 4x3 walked up from the ditched put the cross hairs on him and slowly squeezed the trigger and shot him right behind the left front shoulder, a little high, he walked 5 feet and dropped. Now im stoked and really happy. We walked down to him and started to clean him. What a good hunt, just had to be patient.

DEAR FELIX
Do you have a question about something but don’t want anyone to know you have it? Well, now you can ask those questions! The monthly Dear Felix column gives you the freedom to ask any questions (appropriate to the ELA audience) anonymously. Please: do NOT use anyone’s real name in your submission! Instead of your real name, consider using a nickname that fits your situation (examples below). A Dear Felix box for submissions is in Mrs. Hancock’s room (#325) on the bookcase by the door. 1 to 5 questions will be answered in each month.
There are many topics for questions. Here are a few examples:
*Issues with your parents or siblings
*Issues with our school
*Drama with your friends
*Boyfriend and Girlfriend issues
Please don’t be too shy to ask a question. Remember, if you are wondering, chances are other students are, too!
Dear Felix,
The boy that I like totally ignores me. I really want him to like me or at least be my friend! How can I get him to notice me?
--Crushing Heart
Dear Crushing,
That always is a problem with crushes. What I suggest is that you go and talk to him— NOT text—talk in person! When you make the effort to talk to him in person, he will think that you are being friendly and kind, and will want to talk with you. Good luck!
Dear Felix,
I found out that my friend was saying bad things behind my back! I really trusted him not to do that! What should I do?
--Backstabbed Friend
Dear Backstabbed,
I am very, very sorry that your friend was gossiping about you. My advice is to ask that friend NICELY (when no one is around) why he/she said those things. Hopefully, it was all a misunderstanding. If not, you should continue being polite, but you should probably find a new friend. Good luck!
PHOENIX PHAVES!!
This month I polled two different classes in the elementary school. I polled Mrs. Berry’s 4th class, and Mrs. Worth’s 5th grade class. The question I asked was “Would you rather watch Tangled or Cars?” The classes polls looked liked this:
Obviously Tangled won the poll of the 4th and 5th graders. This movie is a great movie for any age! Even parents would love this movie! It is a classic Disney movie about a prince and a princess. The story goes a little bit like this…
Tangled: lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll 33
Cars: llllllllllll 12

Mother Gothel, must lock Rapunzel in her hidden tower. Rapunzel is now a teenager and her hair has grown to a length of 70-feet. She is curious of the outside world. One day, the Flynn Ryder scales the tower and is taken captive by Rapunzel. Rapunzel makes a deal with the charming thief to act as her guide to travel to the place where the floating lights come from that she has seen every year on her birthday.
In the Junior High the question I asked was “Would you rather watch Cars, Tangled, Arthur, or Inception?”
The polls look like this:
Cars: lllllllll 9
Tangled: lllllllllllllll 15
Arthur: lllll 5
Inception: lllll 5

SERVICE STARS--Hailey Stringham
Has anyone done some service lately? “Service Stars” will be a monthly column in the ELA Times. If you or anyone that you know participated in a community service, (like hospital service or any kind of nice thing for someone in need), don't be shy: write it down! There will be a box in Mrs. Hancock’s room (#325) on the bookcase near the door: put your Service Story in there--and don't forget to include the name of someone that I can talk to about the service! Here is an example of a what I will be doing every month--
This month’s Service Star is Madi Hicks. In December 2010 there was a really bad car crash that included Katie Allen (Jared Allen’s sister), Lauren Crane, and another girl named Ashley McAdams. They carpooled to their school, Herriman High School. Katie was driving and as she was turning into the school parking lot she didn’t double-check to see if a car was coming and a truck hit her little car. Katie broke her collar bone, Lauren broke her back and had to have a lot of back surgery’s, and Ashley was hurt the most: fter the crash she went into a coma.
She was still in a coma when Christmas Eve rolled around. Her mom and two little brothers had to stay in the Hospital for Christmas. Madi’s family decided to give up there usually Christmas Eve and give it to the McAdams family. They made a wonderful Christmas dinner and brought it to the family. They were so happy to not have to eat hospitial food for Christmas! Ashley was out of a coma 2 weeks after the car crash and is doing very well. Way to go Madi!!:)

I need your service ASAP and by the 10th of October. You can put your service in any the box any time of the day. In the ELA Times, I will share 1-3 Service Star stories each month depending on the story's length. We want students in our school to be proactive and do good things for our community and other people. I hope you enjoy reading about ELA's Service Stars in this newspaper each month!
DEAR FELIX....

This advice column is completely confidential so please do not put your name or the name of anyone else in your letter. Instead of your name, you may use a nickname that fits your situation.
Some topics that you can write about but aren’t limited to are:
*Issues with your parents or siblings
*Issues with our school
*Drama with your friends
*Boyfriend and Girlfriend issues
Please don’t be shy to write your questions. This colum is supposed to be fun but give you advice at the same time.

My sister and I have been fighting so much. She is going into 6th grade and she is turning into a total snob. I really want to have fun with her but it is really hard when I don’t want to be around her snobbyness. What should I do?
-Bratty Sister
Dear Bratty Sister,
I am sorry that she Is being a brat to you! My sister started acting like that too! What I suggest is that you try and talk to her when she is being kind. That way you wont have to deal with her attitude but you still get to talk to her. Usuallly the best time is at night. Just go into her room and ask if she wants to play a game with you hopefully she will say yes. Good luck!

You can also talk to some of your friends that already dance and see what where they go and ask them questions about there dance place and the other dance studio’s that they have competed against. I Hope you find a dance place you enjoy :).

My Parents are fighting and I don’t want them to fight! I try to go and talk to them but they say nothing is wrong and I know something I wrong because I hear them every night. What should I do?
-Trouble with parents
Dear Trouble with parents
I am really sorry that your parents are fighting. What I suggest is that you don’t get into there fight’s. They are probley stressed out and are just grouchy. Maybe you can help out around the house and they won’t be so stressed out and things might get better! Good luck!

PHOENIX PHAVES--Dominique Stout
Has anybody ever wondered what the schools favorites are? Now is your chance to find out! Every month there will be an article describing some of the schools favorites! Every month the Phoenix favorite will be determined by the whole school. I think you would want to read this because it would be interesting to find out what your school favorites are!
This months topic is, what artist would you prefer to listen to? Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, or Chris Brown? I don’t take the whole schools votes just a portion of the school! The one that the school voted for was Selena Gomez!
The votes looked like this:
Justin Bieber: llllllll
Selena Gomez: llllllllllllllll
Chris Brown: llll
None of the above: lll
Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992. She is the only child and was born when her mom was sixteen. She started her acting career when she was younger in the T.V. show Barney. Later on she stared in the T.V. show Wizards of Waverly Place! She is now known for her band Selena Gomez and the Scene which she is the lead singer in! Selena is also a fashion designer! She has gotten many awards such as the Teen Choice Award for Music Star-Female. Her favorite subject is science and her favorite sport is basketball. Selena also likes to cheer, surf, and skateboard! Her favorite thing to snack on is chocolate chips. She has four pet dogs named Chip, Willy, Fina, and Wallace. Selena went to Danny Jones Middle School, which is in Texas. In our school the voted most popular song by her was “Love You Like a Love Song!”
Below are some examples of what some people in our school have said:
Brooke Hancock wrote “She is VERY pretty and an amazing singer.” Her favorite song by her is ’I Love You Like a Love Song,” and she hasn’t been to one of her concerts!
