SERVICE STARS--Hailey Stringham

Has anyone done some service lately? “Service Stars” will be a monthly column in the ELA Times. If you or anyone that you know participated in a community service, (like hospital service or any kind of nice thing for someone in need), don't be shy:  write it down! There will be a box in Mrs. Hancock’s room (#325) on the bookcase near the door:  put your Service Story in there--and don't forget to include the name of someone that I can talk to about the service! Here is an example of a what I will be doing every month--

     This month’s Service Star is Madi Hicks. In December 2010 there was a really bad car crash that included Katie Allen (Jared Allen’s sister), Lauren Crane, and another girl named Ashley McAdams. They carpooled to their school, Herriman High School. Katie was driving and as she was turning into the school parking lot she didn’t double-check to see if a car was coming and a truck hit her little car. Katie broke her collar bone, Lauren broke her back and had to have a lot of back surgery’s, and Ashley was hurt the most: fter the crash she went into a coma. 
     She was still in a coma when Christmas Eve rolled around. Her mom and two little brothers had to stay in the Hospital for Christmas. Madi’s family decided to give up there usually Christmas Eve and give it to the McAdams family. They made a wonderful Christmas dinner and brought it to the family. They were so happy to not have to eat hospitial food for Christmas! Ashley was out of a coma 2 weeks after the car crash and is doing very well. Way to go Madi!!:)

In the ELA Times, I will share 1-3 Service Star stories each month depending on the story's length.  We want students in our school to be proactive and do good things for our community and other people. I hope you enjoy reading about ELA's Service Stars in this newspaper each month!

DEAR FELIX....

How many of you have questions that you are too scared to ask and don’t want anyone to know who you are? Well now you can ask those questions. This colum, Dear Felix, gives you the freedom to ask anything “appropriate” that you want without having people know who you are. This advice column is completely confidential so please do not put your name or the name of anyone else in your letter. Instead of your name, you may use a nickname that fits your situation.

In Mrs. Hancock’s room (325) there will be a box for you to put all of your questions in. There will be 5-10  question’s that will be answered in each month.

The boy that I like totally ignores me. I really want him to like me or at least be my friend! How can I get him to notice me?

Dear Crushing Crush, 

That always is a problem with crushes! What I suggest is that you go and talk to him! NOT in text though! When you go and talk to him in person he will think that you are being friendly and kind and will want to talk to you! Good luck :)

My sister and I have been fighting so much. She is going into 6th grade and she is turning into a total snob. I really want to have fun with her but it is really hard when I don’t want to be around her snobbyness. What should I do?

Dear Bratty Sister,

I am sorry that she Is being a brat to you! My sister started acting like that too! What I suggest is that you try and talk to her when she is being kind. That way you wont have to deal with her attitude but you still get to talk to her. Usuallly the best time is at night. Just go into her room and ask if she wants to play a game with you hopefully she will say yes. Good luck!

I found out that my friend was saying bad things behind my back! I really trusted him not to do that! What should I do?

Dear Gossiping Friend,

I am very, very sorry that you found out that your friend was gossiping about you. My advice is that go and ask him (NICELY) when no one is around him and ask him why he said those things. Talk about it and try to make it better. Good luck!

I am trying to find a dance studio to dance at. I have never danced before, what do you suggest?

Dear Dancer,

Thats awesome that you want to dance! It is a great sport. What I suggest is you look at our colom on dance. There will be many studio’s being showed. You can also talk to some of your friends that already dance and see what where they go and ask them questions about there dance place and the other dance studio’s that they have competed against. I Hope you find a dance place you enjoy :).

My Parents are fighting and I don’t want them to fight! I try to go and talk to them but they say nothing is wrong and I know something I wrong because I hear them every night. What should I do?

I am really sorry that your parents are fighting. What I suggest is that you don’t get into there fight’s. They are probley stressed out and are just grouchy. Maybe you can help out around the house and they won’t be so stressed out and things might get better! Good luck!

PHOENIX PHAVES--Dominique Stout

        Has anybody ever wondered what the schools favorites are? Now is your chance to find out! Every month there will be an article describing some of the schools favorites! Every month the Phoenix favorite will be determined by the whole school. I think you would want to read this because it would be interesting to find out what your school favorites are!

        Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992. She is the only child and was born when her mom was sixteen. She started her acting career when she was younger in the T.V. show Barney. Later on she stared in the T.V. show Wizards of Waverly Place! She is now known for her band Selena Gomez and the Scene which she is the lead singer in! Selena is also a fashion designer! She has gotten many awards such as the Teen Choice Award for Music Star-Female. Her favorite subject is science and her favorite sport is basketball. Selena also likes to cheer, surf, and skateboard! Her favorite thing to snack on is chocolate chips. She has  four pet dogs named Chip, Willy, Fina, and Wallace. Selena went to Danny Jones Middle School, which is in Texas.  In our school the voted most popular song by her was “Love You Like a Love Song!”

    Brooke Hancock wrote  “She is VERY pretty and an amazing singer.” Her favorite song by her is ’I Love You Like a Love Song,” and she hasn’t been to one of her concerts!
    Drew Miczo wrote: “She’s hot. They all suck but at least she’s got the looks.” He didn’t know any songs by her, and he hasn’t been to one of her concerts.

This year there has been very many changes to make our school a better place to learn, and have fun at the same time. Some of the changes that we have made Dress Code, For example your not allowed to wear zippers( or buttons) on your sweaters, unless you zip/button them all the way up. If there are not zipped up all the way they are not allowed to wear to school. Logos are also not allowed on clothing wear to school if you wear a logo you would have to call home and they would have to bring you another polo shirt without a logo. Girls: Skirts have to be at knee length or you will have to call home for a change of pants. Boys & Girls: No cargo pants allowed. 

Junior High Changes: The hall way madness has decreased, more people have been getting to classes on time. The Doors in the breakout rooms, have kept from people messing around in between classes. Also the breakout rooms have now been used for extra little class rooms. 

New Teachers in the Junior High:

 Mr. Ace Whitmore(Math Teacher): Ace loves music, sports, drama, and flying; especially flying. He is also a private airplane pilot, cyclist, guitar player, song writer, actor, and according to his kids "world's best dad".

Mrs. Darci Cordero (Science Teacher):. She and her husband are both teachers and have 5 children, they enjoy spending their time at softball tournaments, camping, traveling anywhere there is a beach, and laughing together. 

Mr. CJ Kavanagh (P.E):Once graduated, he spent time performing Search and Rescue along with Ski Patrolling in the winter. It was a year later that he started to guide fly-in, fly-out back country hiking trips into the wilderness of Alaska. 

Lunch Behavior:

1. Food needs to be eaten inside.  No food/wrappers/garbage should be taken outside
2. They are able to go outside but that privilege will be taken away if they leave any trash outside, trample the plants, or are unruly.  We like to let them have some freedom and go outside on the gym side, but not at the expense of aide's sanity or the landscaping!

HOW-TO-- Samantha Bennett

  In this column it’s going to be giving some how-to’s on some fun stuff going on every season. Some of the stuff in this column will be How-to Make a Superhero Jack-o-lantern. This is going to be a column on some fun how to's . So since its almost Halloween we are going to show you how to make a superhero Jack-o-lantern! This is a really fun project especially since its almost Halloween!! The jack-o-lantern came from England and Britain where they would carve faces into vegetables like the turnip and the cabbage plant during halloween time. Then they found out that the pumpkin is a lot bigger and easier to carve. Typically you would carve a scary or funny face into your pumpkin, but I’m going to be showing you how to make a superhero pumpkin.

So now lets start!

What you will need:

1 medium pumpkin 

2 spoons (a small and a big one)

1 knife 

1 pumpkin carver- you can get that at Walmart or other grocery store during halloween

a lot of newspaper

a bowl

sharpie 

1 candle

STEPS:

1st: Lay the newspaper wherever you are going to carve your pumpkin, then set your pumpkin down.

2nd: Get the knife or the pumpkin carver, and cut a circle around the stem, get your spoon and get everything out of the pumpkin.

3rd: Once you have everything out then get out the sharpie and draw whatever superhero logo you want, I chose batman. You can do whatever one you want, for example Batman (which is the easiest), Superman (which is medium) and spiderman (which is more complicated then the others)

4th: Once you have your superhero logo get the pumpkin carver and carve out the shape. try to follow the lines that you drew.

5th: Once you have the logo completely carved out, bring it out side and set it wherever you want it. 

6th:  Then grab your candle and light it, then set it in and put the top on.

Then you have a superhero pumpkin!!!

Tips:

-If you can’t find a pumpkin carver than a knife is ok too.

-If you have a template for your logo you want to do than use that.

-Plus if you want to you can spray paint your pumpkin black.

    

FOR PHOENIX PHANS--Cameron Youngblood

        In Early Light, we have quite a few sports: cross country, volleyball, basketball, cheer, and soccer. This column will cover everything about school sports for all you Phoenix Phans. This will include interviews with the players and coaches of the teams, some stats about the games, and sports events coming up. Stay tuned for this column that will be in the ELA Times once every two months. 

First off, congratulations to everyone who made the volleyball team and thanks to everyone who came out for the volleyball and cross country teams. Second, congrats to the volleyball team for winning their first two games on September 12 to Hawthorn and Channing. The first game started at 4:30 pm. Volleyball is played in terms of games to 25. The first team that gets to 25, wins the game. If one team wins two games in a row, they win the “actual” game. If one team wins one game then the other team wins the next, they will play one final game to decide the final winner. In the first game against Hawthorn, both teams won a game and then ELA won the last game taking the victory 2-1. In the second game against Channing, ELA won the first two games, Channing did not win any, and ELA took the victory once again, the score 2-0. Everybody on the volleyball team played exceptionally well and it all payed off for a great victory. 

Also, our cross country team raced on September 13 at North Star  Academy against North Star, Hawthorn, and Monticello. Our top boy runners were: Anthony DeGaston  who came in 1st and Logan Snedaker who came in 6th place. Our top girl runner was Annalise Anderson who got 5th place. Great job Annalise! Anthony DeGaston was in first for the first part of the race until he took a wrong turn. Anthony had to turn around and catch up to everyone else and he still took first. Great job Anthony! There are lot’s of upcoming games and meets for both of these teams. Be there to support the volleyball and cross country teams in upcoming events! Here is the volleyball schedule...

USA SPORTS--Ben Sieber

     USA Sports is going to be a column that comes to the newspaper every two months. It will talk about college and professional sports, such as baseball, football, soccer, basketball, etc. The column will update you on news going on in sports, single player news (which includes injuries, interviews, etc.), and coach news. This weeks column will be about football.

     BYU chose to be an independent team for the beginning of this football season. Which means they aren’t in a specific conference, so they can play any team. For example they were in the Mountain West Conference last year and mostly played other teams in the same conference. Now that they are independent they will play teams in no specific conference. They decided to do that because they were not getting paid very much. They now get paid as much money per game, as they did the whole season last year ($2,000,000)

     Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) had a third neck surgery in the past two years. This will bring Manning out for at least 2-3 months, which is half to three quarters of the season. This change will put the second string quarterback Kerry Collins in. He was only signed up to be Manning’s backup for a week before he got his surgery, so this is a big thing for Collins. “He’s going to play a lot,” Colt’s coach Jim Caldwell said. Collins played for Penn State in college and had a total of 5,304 passing yards. Collins has played for the Carolina Panthers, the New York Giants, the Oakland Raiders, and the Tennessee Titans as a starter, so being a backup is different for him. But it wont be so different for at least the first half of the season. 

     Tueni Lupeamanu, from the Herriman Mustangs football team, is already being scouted  by the BYU coaching staff. Last year he was playing quarterback, but he is also a great linebacker. But since he was quarterback last year they didn’t want to risk him getting hurt playing linebacker. BYU’s offensive and defensive coaches are going to have to decide what side of the ball he will play on, because he is great at both positions, that is if he accepts the offer to play for them.

So You Think You Can Draw?

   This Month I will be writing about artists, I will ask them what is they’re favorite kind of artwork, what kind of art do they do, is it hard, and why they draw. 

   

THE TURNING POINT- Braxton Leavitt

 In my column the turning point I will have hunting stories, game recipes, Good gear, pictures and retrievers, waterfowl birds, big game, etc. In this issue we'll be talking about labs.

          Labs, Or most known as Labrador Retrievers. These Dogs are very talented dogs, They are very good “water dogs”. They also are very good retrievers (hint: Look at name). They retrieve basically anything you can train them to. These dogs were breaded to retrieve and some people train them as guard dogs. Labs have different colors, Yellow, chocolate, And black. These dogs are originated from Newfoundland in The 16^th century, and were recognized in New England as kennel club in 1903. The earliest known Breeders of  Labradors were wealthy hunters who maintained large kennels of shooting dogs (Labradors)

          Labs in the US are 71% used for duck, geese, pheasant, and chucker hunting. For instants, you’re out in the field geese hunting, You call the geese in, You shoot them then you blow a whistle for your lab and will go out where you shot the goose and the lab will pick it up in its mouth and bring it back to you. Speaking of  Hunting upland birds here are some recipes.
                                         DUCK Casserole         Ingredients

• 1 pound pork sausage links, sliced
• 1 tablespoon whole cloves
• 1 whole onion, peeled
• 3 sprigs fresh parsley
• 1 sprig fresh thyme
• 1/2 pound bacon
• 1 sprig fresh rosemary
• 1 pound dry navy beans, soaked overnight
• 1 bay leaf
• 3 carrots, peeled and sliced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 pound skinned, boned duck breast halves, sliced into thin strips.
• 1 fresh tomato, chopped

Directions

1.    In a large skillet, brown the sliced sausage over medium heat.

2.    Insert whole cloves into onion. Roll bacon up, and tie with a string. Tie together parsley, thyme, and rosemary.

3.    In a large slow cooker, place soaked beans, sausage, bacon, onion studded with cloves, fresh herbs, bay leaf, carrots, minced garlic, and duck. Add enough water to cover the other ingredients. Cook for 1 hour on HIGH. Reduce heat to LOW, and continue cooking for 6 to 8 hours.

4.    Remove onion, bacon, and herbs. Stir in chopped tomatoes. Continue cooking for 1/2 hour. Serve.        

 My uncles lab is a black lab and every time we go duck hunting we have him so he can retrieve our ducks etc. He is 7 years old and already has a gray muzzle, Labs tend to mature slow depending on the rate they hunt and are active, Tyson (Labs name) goes probably 3 days a week during the season so it puts a lot of stress into him but he loves it!

Street Fighter Third Strike Online Edition Review 

INTRODUCTION 

 Street Fighter Third Strike Online Edition is a 2d fighting game that is also remake of  street fighter 3, but with the option to go online and battle other players in the expanding multiplayer universe. the cost is 15 dollars, and in my opinion is worth every penny.

GAMEPLAY

Street Fighter Third Strike Online Edition takes the feel of a old arcade game and expertly ports its easy control base system to your xbox 360/playstation 3. the default screen is that of a arcade game, but in the options menu you can change it to a regular screen. Street Fighter Third Strike Online Edition hits that old arcade feel right on the money, while you might have a hard time trying to do the more advanced combos there is a parry training option. but it doesn't tell you how to do parries, never the less tell you what a parry is. so its a option better left skipped. it also offers you on how to do character combos using special moves.

                                                       MULTIPLAYER 

Street Fighter Third Strike Online Edition offers a wide variety of multiplayer options. from fighting your friend on the couch to fighting some guy in russia, this game lets you fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. it also offers a wide variety of multiplayer options but not to much that it overwhelms you. so you could find a very specific match. like fighting a person you lives in europe who is a level 2 and the match only goes on for 30 seconds and has 7 rounds. 

SINGLE PLAYER 

if your not a fan of multiplayer then there is a single player mode. but it only offers arcade mode. its where you have to fight 10 enemies. its pretty standard and does offer a choice on who to fight for the next match. you can also do this challenges that unlock vault points (VP for short). when you unlock VP you can go to the vault and unlock specific charters concept art. its a nice edition and something i hope to see in the future.

THE VERDICT 

street fighter third strike online edition is a generous offer by Capcom for those to relive those old arcade days. i would recommend this game to anyone who is looking for some fun. and while though there aren't many options, it still gives you a amazing arcade feel. in the end i give street fighter third strike online edition a 9/10.

TECH TALK

Welcome to the first issue of Tech Talk. Today we will talk about the Sony Vaio Z series, the EN-V, and more. These new technology updates will keep you kept up with school, Facebook, Twitter, or the latest phones.

Computers and Tablets: The Sony Vaio z series is a computer that will seem like a great Notebook, but will run your budget out of the house with its high price, $1,970, and super expensive parts. but on the plus side, the notebook is only 3 to 4 pounds, and its hard drive speed is unbeatable. Hands down, I will give this laptop, 4 stars, for performance and portability.

Music Players: Apple has yet to reveal their plans for the new Ipod nano, but word has it that the new Nano will be shaped like the previous model, a square with a touch screen, but will probably have a microphone, a camera, and a new motion sensor, meaning the Ipod will be used for more than just music. The release date has not been announced, but we will keep you updated.

Cell Phones: Looking for a new phone? The Apple Iphone 4 is the top of the line technology in phones! Run on Apples OS, is quick, has a lot of memory and battery life, (about 1 day if you leave it on), and has a beautiful retina display. Not looking for that? Well then, try the Samsung intensity 2, the perfect phone for texting, surfing the web, and just messing around.

Miscellaneous: The Chevy EN-V appeared in japan and is making its way to the united states.  it is a futuristic- looking vehicle that can drive without a person at the controls.  The steering wheel looks like a tablet mixed with a PSP, and has quite a nice interior.  many people cant wait for the EN-V to go on sale, but will probably come up this next year.

LIGHT'S, CAMERA, ACTION -- Jake Watt

      In this column, “Light’s, Camera, Action!”, It will be taking you throughout ELA and talking about the plays coming out. I will also have interviews with Mrs. Butler and crew. Theater classes (I, II, and III) will also be included. The movies that are coming out will be in this section as well. I will be talking about the two newest movies that will be coming out and the Halloween attractions.

     The first movie that is coming out is "Footloose". It will be coming out on October 14th, 2011 and it is not rated. If you like musicals, then you will love this movie! Also if you know Hailey Stingham, her cousin is in the movie. Her name is Julianne Hough. Dream House is another movie that is coming out. It is with Daniel Craig which was in James Bond for people who don’t know the name. This is a thriller type movie, so if you like to be scared and surprised, then this movie is for you. Dream House will be coming out on September 30th, 2011.

     Now on to the haunted attractions. The first one that is coming up is “The Haunted Library.” We did the haunted library last year and we will be doing it again. This time you will be noted on when and where it is. The haunted library is in the library at ELA on October 28, 2011.  There is also Nightmare On 13th which is a very haunted house. If you are interested to go there, it is in Salt Lake City and it is on 320 West and 1300 South. It is right off the I-15. The third attraction is “The Haunted Forest” in American Fort. This is on 1015 South and 500 East, right off of the I-15. "Frightmares!" is the last attraction I am writing about. This is at Lagoon down in Farmington on 375 Lagoon Drive. Frightmares is only open on the weekends from September 23rd through October 29th. That's all for now and catch more of the action in the ELA Times.
